Community Hunt

This week I went on a hunt for herbs at Home Depot. On my trip I found all sorts of herbs that have many interesting uses in our community today. Below are pictures from my trip as well as some of the things I have learned about some of these select herbs!
Sweet Mint
Mint can be found in temperate areas of Europe, Asia, and Africa. Its leaves have shown to have a pleasant smell and taste as well as antisptic qualities. It has seveal uses, one being that it aids in digestion. Due to its pleasant taste and smell, mint oil is used as flavoring in drinks, candy, medicine, soaps and toothpaste. Also due to its smell, mint is a dterrent for rats and mice. It is also utilized in cough mixtures to help with bronchial trouble as well as asthma. It has been utilized throughout history by monks, Romans and Greeks due to its herbal benefits.
German Thyme
Thyme has proven to have many helpful functions. When soaked in alcohol thyme has been found to be an anti-acne treatment, better than many harsh solutions used today. You can also be a substitute for salt in foods, which can lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Thyme is great to relieve coughs and sore thoats as well as boost immunities so it makes a great tea when you are sick. Thyme's essential oils also function as a disinfectant and bug repellent. It has shown to be quite a useful herb to have. There are hundreds of species of thyme and it can be found in temperate regions. This herb has been around since ancient time and its many medicinal and culinary virtues have been used since then.
Greek Oregano
Oregano which is also known as marjoram can be found in Europe, Central Asia, and North America. Its leaves have antiseptic, relaxing, and tonic properties. Its most known use by far is in cooking, especially in tomato sauces for pizza or spaghetti. However, it also has medicinal uses, including relieving indigestion. It also eases coughs and colds, and can be gargled to help with sore throats. As an ointment marjoram can be used to ease aching and stiff muscles.  It has been used for centuries because of its benefits. Monks used it as flavoring as well as medecine. Ancient Greeks would plant it on graves because they thought it would bring joy to the dead.
